The bill to reserve 33% seats in Parliament and State Legislatures which has been passed in the Rajya Sabha has been put into cold storage wiith Pranab Mukherjee , the Leader of the House stating that it would be introduced in the Lok Sabha only after consultations with all concerned.  The Leader of the House has to give this assurance because the three Yadavs viz., Lalu , Mulayam and Sharad wanted that sub-quotas within 33% should be made available for OBC and Muslim women.  Actually, these Yadavs are not fighting for OBC and Muslim women but for themselves because they know that the ...

Little over two years ago, plainspoken businessman Dhondup Wangchen bought a small camera and began interviewing monks and yak herders for his documentary film Leaving Fear Behind. He bravely gave a voice to Tibetans living under China's rule. Sadly, after finishing the film, he was arrested and his own voice was silenced. As a prisoner of the Chinese government , Wangchen: * endured torture to extract a confession. * contracted hepatitis B and is denied adequate treatment. * had the lawyer he chose replaced with a government-appointed one--violating his right to choose his own counsel an...

While participating in the discussions on the Women Reservation Bill in the Rajya Sabha , Ms. Brinda Karat of CPM thanked all the male members of the House for supporting the bill which would give 33% reservations in Parliament and State Legislatures to women.  She is right.  It is male chivalry which helped pass the Bill in the Rajya Sabha.  While all males are not chivalrous, it is the male feminists who help in women getting their rights.  Of course, I do not deny that women too have to fight for their rights.  However, it was Raja Ram Mohan Roy of Bengal who with the help of the B...

The Bill to reserve 33% of the seats in Parliament and State Legislatures has been passed in Rajya Sabha by 186 to 1 votes.  It is to the credit of the Government, BJP and Left parties that this bill has been passed wiithout any sub-quota for Muslims which would have led to the division of the country on communal basis.  Also no sub-quota for OBC was provided.  This time while making reservations on gender basis, Govt. has seen to it that no reservations have been made on caste or communal basis.  Now the Govt. should take the next logical step of abolishing all reservations on caste or ...

Never Again!" is often said regarding the atrocities of the Holocaust during World War II and yet, the horrors of those times still live on TODAY. In North Korea , 150,000 to 200,000 people are believed to be imprisoned in government-run concentration camps--called gulags--for criticizing the government or practicing Christianity. Not only are these "offenders" sent to the camps, but the next two generations of their family as well, in order to "root out the bad blood and seed of dissent." The conditions of these labor camps are terrible: food rations are meager (many survive on rats)...
