My father who was a foreman at Bhakra Dam, wanted me to become an Engineer as he himself could not become an Engineer. The result was that he sent me to study for Faculty of Science but as I had no interest in science, I failed twice and wasted two years before I could pass the Faculty of Science Exams. I told my father that I am no good at science but he told me to study for Bachelor of Science Exam. I again failed once and finally cleared Bachelor of Science Exams. I got only second division so I could not join Engg. but to please my father, I joined M.Sc. (Maths with Specialisation in Statistics). Again, I failed and then my father realised that I was not fit for passing a Science exam. Then, I appeared in Assistant Grade Exam and cleared it at first attempt. I, thus, became a babu and could not fulfil my father's desires. However, I was able to surpass my father in career and retired as Deputy Secretary while my father retired only as Foreman. I came to know from my example that I should not force my children to become like me. So, I allowed my children to do whatever they wanted to do. My son succeeded in his desires and became a Software Engineer but my daughter failed to become a Company Secretary which she wanted to become. So, the result of not foisting myself on my children gave me 50% success.
